Real life got in the way of my annual pilgrimage to NYFW… however, I am hopeful I can make it to (capsule) this weekend… so many talented designers in one space!!
Included on the list of must-see designers in NY native Titania Inglis. I love her latest collection (pictured above) and can’t wait to check it out in person. More about the designer:
Titania Inglis was born and raised in Ithaca, New York, the daughter of a Chinese mother and an American father, and first became aware of her interest in design during a year abroad in Denmark. Much like her life, her eponymous womenswear line is a study in contrasts: minimal, yet lush; tough, yet feminine; modern, yet rooted in traditional handwork.
A strong believer in craftsmanship, Titania drapes each piece by hand in her Brooklyn atelier, and has them sewn in a small factory in New York’s garment district. The line’s materials are selected with thought to their environmental impact as well as their quality, and include organic cottons from Japan, vegetable-tanned leather, and dead stock fabrics from the local garment industry.
Each season’s collection springs from a new hand technique, from rust dyeing (Spring 2010) to beeswaxed cotton (Fall 2010), bias cutting and zero-waste patternmaking (Spring 2011) and dip-dyeing with natural dyes (Spring 2012). This process-based approach comes from Titania’s studies at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, where she embraced the school’s credo of honesty in materials.
Titania also studied draping and patternmaking at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and apprenticed under cult New York designers Camilla Stærk, Jean Yu, and Threeasfour before launching her solo line.
