One to Watch: Arena Page

When I was in 5th grade I had an assignment to write about “a paradox.” I chose to write about Möbius Strip (you know, it has only one side but yet, it appears have two sides…) and have been fascinated with the shape ever since. It seems that Arena Page from LCF shares a similar fascination and she put hers to much better use than mine, creating this beautiful collection for AW 12/13.

Arena’s collection is inspired by the single sided surface (The Mobius Strip) through the study of Topology. Exploring the region between art and mathematics and finding beauty in geometry. She used computer technology for a new approach to design. Complex, minimal surfaces were generated using a 3D modelling computer program to which a ‘flattening’ process was applied. The flat 2D patterns transferred to paper and fabric for further manipulation and experimentation in relation to the body. This design process changes the design methodology; going from 3D surface to 2D and then back to 3D.
This collection is a true celebration of creative pattern cutting and was produced solely by the designer, in its entirety, from start to finish.
