I can’t believe I’m up this early on a rainy Sunday. Especially after rambunctious girls night at Bella Luna (Brazilian Passion… mmmmm).
Anyway I have tons to do today (I always look  forward to the weekend, and when it gets here I am just as swamped as I am during the week!!). Anyway, I wanted to leave you with  Sheila Frank. I love her flirty designs, and I’m especially feeling her swim collection. More about Shelia:

Sheila Frank is a young independent designer rooted on the east coast, expanding across the US and internationally.  Sheila received numerous awards during her college career at Moore College of Art and Design.  She received her BFA in Fashion Design and interned for Charlotte Ronson.  Fresh out of college Sheila has the ambition to make her name a household name.  With her love of design of passed eras, Sheila meshes her inspiration with her modern aesthetic.  Sheila is interested in all shapes and sizes and believe that all woman deserve to look and feel stylish. An avid animal lover Sheila vowed not to use leather or fur in her clothing line.  She doesn’t feel the need to preach, just lead by example.  Sheila has shown during two fashion week seasons at the Broadway Comedy Club on 53rd and Broadway in NYC. This young designer is excited about what the future has to offer, and the label will grow with her.

You can buy her designs at Oak Boston which, by the way,  has some great father’s day gift ideas… including my personal favorite Apple Key cuff links! I am also mildly obsessed with the Beacon Hill Bangle!

When I was kid, my parents were always very creative with my toys. Of course my brother and I had some run-of-the-mill stuff (still love Teddy Ruxpin to this day… lol)… but my favorite toys were always the unique things that we had and no one else did. One of our favorites was this giant parachute we used to store in our back shed. It was huge and spanned most of our back yard when it was completely unraveled. When you’re 4 and 7 you can spend hours in a giant parachute… making forts, playing tag, you name it. One of my favorite things to do was to climb to the middle and wear the entire thing as a dress. I felt like the princess of everything!! Clearly, designers Doris Kwaka & Nike Kondakis had a similar idea when they created their breathtaking Parachute Collection.

I love love love!

Instead of the short little bio I usually do on designers, check out Nike in her own words!

Check out Miss Gracey’s MySpace page for more photos of this shoot for Drum Magazine.

Also, check out this month’s Elle for more photos.

Busy day so I better get moving!

Well, I didn’t quite make it to the rock, but I did have another enlightening weekend. Hope you did too!

I am a little scattered this morning but wanted to share my latest obsession, the “Necklush” by designers Stephano Diaz and Troy M. Hicks. These cool scarfish designs are designed to keep you warm while looking cool, and keep you looking cool all year long. Each piece is unique, allowing you to be creative with your individual look. The free-form loops are multifunctional too, you can use your Necklush as a necklace or scarf or whatever else you can think of. They are made of cut cotton loops with limited edition screen printed designs.  I love the effect they have on a casual cotton T or tank top.

Check out their Etsy Shop!

Who Wants To Be An Illionaire?

I have a friend who has slow-game… he describes it as the kind of game that sneaks up on you, slowly…. so that before you realize what’s happening, you’re madly in love with him. I am starting to think that Boston has slow-game… I refuse to admit that I love this city… but I have to say it’s growing on me. I guess that’s because I’m lucky enough to know some pretty amazing people…  ok, before I get too mushy, on to the fashion:

Today’s designer is Illionaire.
I absolutely love these designs… last seasons’ Spring Summer collection is amazing!  I must say I’m somewhat resisting the W 09 collection’s obsession with the 80s… I know, I know, the resurgence was inevitable… but I’m gonna withhold my adoration for the trend as long as I can. It’s gonna take a lot for me to re-succumb to the 80s!

Ok. That’s all for now.

MAJOR Urban Socialite Obsession: Cocoa Pink

by urbansocialite on February 11, 2009

You can thank Jill for my newest obsession…. and when I say obsession, I mean I literally can’t stop smelling myself (it gets less weird as you read on, trust me). Seriously, it all started back at the end of January when my office had it’s “secret holiday” exchange thingy.  As people unwrapped their books, candles, and margarita glasses (not bad, right?) I unwrapped a piece of paper with the promise of lotion. Jill, my not-so-secret gift giver had recently become obsessed with her friends company Cocoa Pink. I had commented once that she smelled good and her whole face lit up as she described the amazing handmade products… anyway, she was hooked and thought she’d share the love.

Because all products are handmade daily, orders take approximately four weeks to ship. Mine came yesterday and I can honestly say I’ve been wrapped in scent-sational bliss ever since. Not only do these bath and body products smell heavenly, but in one night they worked wonders on my weather-beaten skin. When I say I have tried every lotion out there, I mean I have tried every lotion out there. This stuff is the best. So amazing in fact, that I am placing an order for myself right now (I don’t want to run out!) and one for my mom.

My favorite part about Cocoa Pink? I know it’s crazy, but this time of year is the worst for me. It’s just so cold and dreary! Yesterday I got home from the gym, showered (using Naked ~ Moist & Foamy Sugar Scrub) and lotioned up with So Broke Body Butta. When I woke up this morning, my face was resting on my arm. I literally broke into a smile because I still smelled so yummy. It’s the perfect winter pick me up!

More about the company/ sustainability:

CocoaPink is dedicated to supporting the effort for green conscious living. CocoaPink is constantly searching for sustainable solutions by using eco-friendly products whenever possible. Our commitment to morally driven business practices are key in how we hope to impact our surroundings. Examples of a few of our choices include investigating and evaluating our supply lines for cruelty free ingredients that are certified NO ANIMAL TESTING materials. Another important example is our support of worldwide free trade companies and companies that sponsor community projects in struggling economies.

We also sacrifice materials that have a negative impact on our world, even if doing so compromises our profits. One example of this is our decision to discontinue using palm oil because of the destruction of rain forests by palm oil harvesting. We now use shea butter from a community outreach project. Shea butter is 4x more expensive, but we believe that the choices we make now must consider the future and our responsibility to that future, not just immediate profit.

With prices starting around $5 there is really no excuse not to indulge!

21 degrees and good morning! BRRR!!! I have been walking around my apartment trying to think of something cozy enough to tempt me outside… the short answer is nothing… then I remembered Abigail Adams‘ infamous Peahoodies. Taking the best from both (the cool classic shape of a pea coat and the warm cozy comfort of your favorite hoodie) these great designs will make you smile while keeping you warm. Abigail Ingram and Sarah Adams are the designers behind this fun brand and you can buy Peahoodies at their etsy shop and at buyolympia.

Stay warm!

Punk Rock Bride (Not Your Average Gown!)

by urbansocialite on January 6, 2009

Let me start by saying I’m not a big wedding person. The planning, the scheduling, the band/ food/ place settings… ugh! The whole thing seems like a nightmare. To me, if and when it ever happens, I want the day to be about two things: me and the guy I marry… period. I’ve never been one for pomp and circumstance (unless of course, you count my reaction when I find a great pair of Marc Jacobs shoes on sale at DSW or something…)

Anyway, I tend to think people over-do the whole thing. When I first heard about Punk Rock Bride I was skeptical. I thought, “great, just what we need, another wedding gown designer…” then, I saw the dresses. Designer Stephanie Ward literally took my breath away with her truly original take on the conventional wedding dress.

A RISD grad (I took classes there when I was at Brown and was always truly amazed at how talented their students are), Stephanie graduated with degree in Apparel Design. Each year of her tenure, her designs were selected for RISD’s annual collection, with her first year’s innovative design winning recognition and accolade in Travel + Leisure magazine. Shortly thereafter, Stephanie served as an apprentice at the design house of Robert Scott and David Brooks, and upon graduating, worked as a freelancer for Sigrid Olsen.

Following that, Stephanie created Punk Rock Bride in response to an overwhelming number of brides who were looking for something different… who were  underwhelmed by the fluff of a traditional gown.  While her designs are unique, they still maintain simple silhouettes and find uniqueness in their details and mixing of nontraditional fabrics. Each dress is made with the highest quality fabrics, level of craftsmanship, and attention to detail.

Stephanie offers a refreshing, youthful, urban alternative to the traditional wedding dress… enjoy!

Grey Ant

08h_03.jpg

I woke up with the song Wonderwall stuck in my head (sorry, too lazy to post the video, click the link). It’s one of those songs from my past that creeps up at the most random and appropriate times. For instance, picture me sitting at bar (if you knew me, this would be hard to picture because I hate bars and the idea of sitting on a stool and staring at someone pouring overpriced beer all night is as close to dreadful as say…. driving over the Tobin* to get the Chelsea… I digress…) discussing life’s mysteries… like which box to check on the SATs. Anyway, it was random to say the least… very good… but random. To top things off there was this old floppy haired guy in the corner wearing flannel (I know, tragic) signing all these really great songs really out of tune. It was so bad it was ironic, which I guess made it good. Somewhere between “The Piano Man” and “Your Song” he attempted “Wonderwall.”

I haven’t heard it in years… it’s a really great song when you listen to the words. I remember listening to it back in the day (I won’t tell you how old I was because it really dates me. I think they’ve already made a remix of the song already! )… it was as relevant to me then as it is to me now… and as it was to me that night. It was one of those moments that make you sit back and think that maybe things, events, songs and people really do come into your life for a reason… you know, and it’s up to you to make sense as to why.

Anyway… focus Brooke… on to fashion. Today’s designer is Grant Krajecki’s line, Grey Ant. Grant got his start in design making costumes for porn films (M & J I knew you’d like that). More about the line from NY Mag:

Launched in L.A. in 1998, Grant Krajecki’s Grey Ant line started out as a never-ending party of campy eighties fashion. The actual shows were just as much theatrical romps: backup dancers courtesy of Ricky Martin and Cher providing leggy entertainment, runways under freeways, and so on. The line has been a favorite on the West Coast—its flash more suited to the sun-loving young things on Rodeo Drive than anywhere else. But with Krajecki’s decision to move the show to New York in spring 2007 and a more pared-down runway to boot, the designer could be laying the groundwork for a strong East Coast following. He also recently launched a denim line, going for something a little more fashion-forward with his high-waists.

*I can really only think of one reason to drive over that $7-toll-death-trap-of-a-bridge…

Time to prepare for Monday Gossip Girl watching ritual. J Lohr anyone?

Yo! (ana)

by urbansocialite on November 29, 2008

 holiday_08_002.jpg

holiday_08_006.jpg

Last night was the first time I got to wear my newest Yoana Baraschi dress… as I stumbled over cobblestone (you try managing Boston’s streets in 4-inch heels) and gazed down at my incoming texts…. I couldn’t help but smile. I was reminded that there’s no need to examine thankfulness on just one day. In fact, as I hugged my sleeping-bag jacket close, I realized that that happy little feeling every time my phone beeps (it’s actually more like a “blop” than a “beep”) it’s a little reminder as to just how thankful I am… for my family, friends and even those random people you met in a place that you consider hell. It’s all about embracing experiences… you know?
Anway, you know I get like this sometimes… I’ll stop and tell you more about Yoana, the creator of my adorable dress from last night:

Born in Bucharest, Romania, Yoana Baraschi was raised in a family of artists, rich in culture and style. Her mother, Elli Baraschi, was an educator and a true fashion icon who felt that being stylish and elegant was the ultimate creative expression for a woman. Her father, Constantin Baraschi, a leading figure in the Romanian art world, was a renowned sculptor and Dean of the Fine Arts Institute. Following in his footsteps, Yoana studied drawing and sculpture from a very early age. She continued her artistic studies at the Fine Arts Institute of Bucharest where she received a BA in Sculpture. In 1978, a few years after the death of her parents, Yoana left communist Romania for Paris, where she got her first design job working for Emmanuelle Khahn as an embroidery designer. During her four years in Paris, she also worked at Studio de Style Jean Azel as an associate designer on collections such as Leonard, Cacharel, Mugler, and Faconable.

In 1983, Yoana moved to New York where she began to work as an illustrator for WWD and continued her work in textile design for various studios. She then shifted her focus in 1986 when she began working as a shoe designer for Mario Valentino and was introduced to the factories of Napoli and trade shows of Milan. During her many travels through Italy, Yoana was exposed to their fine tradition of craftsmanship, working with the best in the trade, which gave her a strong reference point for her career. It was during this time that she started I.B. Design Studio, which was created to translate European concepts for an American market. Her work had her traveling extensively throughout Hong Kong, Paris, Romania, California and India.

Yoana began working for Angelique Imports in 1988, where she developed a passion for hand loomed textiles and vintage embroideries. Her years with the company brought her to India numerous times a year, so it naturally became a second home to her. It was in India that Yoana formed her strong sense of color and love for traditional artisanal techniques, which can be found heavily throughout her own collection. Yoana did not slow down until 1994, when she gave birth to Sophia, her first daughter. At this point, she was hired as the Design Director for Guess Knitwear.

The turning point of Yoana’s designer career came in 1999, when she began working as Creative Director for Betsey Johnson. She was heavily influenced by not only business success the company had achieved, but also Betsey’s own originality and vision. It was this time period that allowed Yoana the courage to live her own vision and believe that she could start her own collection. In 2002, armed with her first sample collection created in her bedroom, Yoana was able to find a showroom to represent her line, received her first order from Saks Fifth Avenue, and was invited to participate in the esteemed Intermezzo Trade Show.

Yoana Baraschi now has showrooms representing her collection in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, and London and can be found in approximately 500 specialty boutiques globally such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s West, Intermix, and Fred Segal. During her 6 years in business, Yoana has continued to amass an impressive roster of fans among young and stylish Hollywood; Halle Berry, Sienna Miller, Paris Hilton, Rachel Bilson, Heidi Klum, and Lauren Conrad.

I love the ruffled bottoms featured in her Resort 2008 collection… they kind of move independent of you, giving every step a kind of unique fluidity. That being said, I’m off to Newbury (yes you are coming M) for a little fall retail therapy session. I avoided Black Friday, but there’s nothing like a sunny Saturday shopping excursion to weed through life’s little landmines, you know?

Be Thankful, Repliccate Kindness

by urbansocialite on November 25, 2008

replica.jpg

I have so many  things to be thankful for I don’t know where to begin. Instead of going into some sort of mushy discourse, I figure it’s best to show my gratitude through my actions. You know, random acts of kindness and all that. It’s amazing how little things like offering up your seat on the subway, buying someone a random cup of coffee or even offering a smile can make a huge difference in someones day. Take for instance, this morning on the subway. Crowded. Rush Hour. Rainy. Gross. As people smooshed themselves inside, smacking each-other with damp umbrellas, I was literally shocked when a kind person sitting near me offered me his seat (I was a bit loaded down with work-stuff). That simple act turned an otherwise dreadful situation into one that made me smile.

When I got off the T I was literally drenched by this deluge of water and wind that inverted my umbrella and left me frizzy. Instead of being bitter, I shook it off and continued on to work. As I walked, I passed an officer doing a road detail. He looked MISERABLE. I thought of my friend on the T and as I passed I asked him if he wanted any coffee. You would have thought I offered him a million dollars! Thanks to T-man, Officer Soggy got a warm cup of joe. Maybe he’ll be compelled to “pay it forward” and will go easy on the next speeder (based on my driving record, it could very easily be me!)

Anyway, enough with the feel good stuff. On to today’s designer, Rebecca Duyzer of Replicca Clothing.  She runs this independent company in her hometown of Hamilton, Ontario.  I love her cozy designs!

Check her out on Etsy and myspace.
