The beauty of science! I am loving Nervous System’s experimental jewelry! By combining nontraditional materials like silicone rubber and stainless steel with rapid prototyping methods, designers Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg create gorgeous jewelery inspired by complex patterns generated by computation and nature.

Statement Necklaces at Any Price

by urbansocialite on March 17, 2010

screen-shot-2010-03-17-at-84254-am.png

The thing I like about statement necklaces is the way they can take a simple outfit (jeans and a tank top) and totally dress it up… Here are some fun pieces, including some Urban Socialite favorites (Ka/Pow/Wow, Necklush, Giia and Suzanna Dai). Also, note how similar the Banana Republic ($52) and Oscar De La Renta (about $1,200) necklaces are. This is definitley a trend… and we all know what happens to trends (um… chandelier earrings?)… so shop smart!

1.  Ka/Pow/Wow- from farfetch.com - £110

2. Bounkit Faceted Oval Amethyst Necklace from vivre.com - $1,815.00

3.  Necklush necklace from necklush.com  - $62

4. Target: Two Strand Beaded Necklace - Goldtone from target.com -$50

5. Statements necklace by Banana Republic- bananarepublic.gap.com -$52

6. Oscar De La Renta Jewel encrusted necklace from-brownsfashion.com- £795

7. Giia necklaces- from her Etsy shop- from $60

8.  Colour and Crystal Statement Necklace - Hannah Zakari from hannahzakari.co.uk£70

9. Suzanna Dai from suzannadai.com-  around $395

BTW, I realize $50 is still a lot of money… if you have any great deals you want to share, please do!

T.G.I.F! Let’s see if I can stay out of trouble this weekend!
I may or may not make it to NYC… if anyone has a unique perspective on fashion week or a story from the trenches they want to share, just shoot me an email.

Today’s designer, Suzanna Dai, makes stunning necklaces that I just love. If you guys haven’t visited FADMASHION you should definitley check it out, especially if you are an emgerging designer looking for exposure!

More about today’s designer:

Suzanna Dai is a collection of jewelry and accessories inspired by old-world travel, exotic destinations, and diverse cultures.  Each exquisite piece has a vintage feel with a modern flair.  All items are hand-crafted with cording, metal threads, semi-precious beads, silver, and 14K gold-plated components.

The Suzanna Dai customer is sophisticated and glamourous with a dramatic edge, an adventurous and sometimes quirky dreamer who appreciates the nostalgia and style of the past while passionately anticipating the thrill of tomorrow.  She is personified in the Suzanna Dai collection.

Suzie Gallehugh is the creative force behind the Suzanna Dai collection, and she has infused her unique personality into each design.  Suzie’s love of intricate embellishments, international travel, foreign cultures, and all things vintage led her to create Suzanna Dai.  She lives in New York City with her miniature dachshund Chloe.

Ready to start your weekend early? I freaking love this song. Thanks to PFOP for posting video and download link.

Busy Bangles

by urbansocialite on January 2, 2010

I always have about 5 or six silver bangles on . . . I don’t even know how, why, or when I started wearing them, but I’ve collected a ton over the course of the past few years and each one has come to represent something special. As I was browsing some of my favorite design sites, I couldn’t help but notice this emerging techno- trend (these are both just prototypes) … personally, I think dial phone (top) and iBangle (bottom) are both genius. The two things I never leave home without redesigned into bracelet form. Yes please!

How Fortunato

I had the craziest dreams last night! What does it mean when you drive down a little dirt road and come out to a sand bar surrounded by 9 foot swells that appear like they’re about to come crashing down on you but, at the very last minute, dissipate into a cool refreshing foam? Hmmm…..

Anyway, I could have sworn that I wrote about Lizzie Fortunato in the past but I couldn’t find the post anywhere. I figured since she helped dress up VPL (yesterday’s post) it would make sense to post about her now! Here’s the skinny from The Cut:

Lizzie Fortunato Jewels‘ mantra is that high-end jewelry should not be limited to precious materials. Designer Elizabeth Fortunato uses ecofriendly found and reclaimed objects from around the world, while her twin sister, Kathryn, handles the business end of the company. The young women have grown from winning over their peers during their days at Duke to becoming favorites of Condé Nast editors, and they recently designed jewelry for VPL’s runway show. With their notably statement pieces taking New York by storm, we sat down with the dynamic duo to talk about old-school Betsey Johnson, Obama, and the open road.

Zipped up by: Reborne Jewelry, Sebastian Errazuriz, and Sergio Rossi

This fall, tis’ the season to zip your lips (with Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, AIM, Yahoo Chat and Texting… I’m beginning to feel like no secret is safe these days!) and your wardrobe. Seriously, Twit, FB and AIM all you want, but keep a few details to yourself. Letting people know what’s going on 24/7 takes the mystery away… and how boring are people with no mysteries??

I am not quite sure how I feel about the zipper trend… though I have to say I love the necklace from Reborne… the Reborne collection also has a cool take on the Michael Kors giant chain necklace that Rachel Roy has been raving about as of late (zippers included, of course).

More later.

Bangle: by Silver Made Studio

I can’t believe the summer is almost over!! Anyway, above are some great designers I’m sure you will love. Warning: aside from the very reasonably priced bangle, today’s post is NOT recession friendly. Also, on a side note, I had an opportunity to check out Rachel by Rachel Roy at Macy’s yesterday… I wasn’t as impressed as I wanted to be… I equate her with timeless, classic, style and I found this new wallet-friendly collection to be too trend-focused and really not that different than a lot of other stuff that’s out there… anyway, I’m interested to hear what you think.

I still have a about a million things on my summer check-off list so I better get moving. Rock? MV? Ferry to Ferry? So much to do, so little time!!

Yesterday was like… a perfect Monday!

Today’s designer made me smile with her fun, playful pieces. Giia is an interior architect/ product designer from Italy (I have a weakness for all things Italian!). I love the way her dramatic neck pieces can dress up even the simplest jeans and t-shirt. And they’re so unique! A definite head-turner.

Be sure to check out her blog as well.

Esther K Will Make Your Day!

by urbansocialite on July 27, 2009

ellington-web.jpg

crescent-emily.jpg

It’s funny . . . I woke up with Philly on my mind and today’s designer just so happens to reside in the City of Brotherly Love. Completely inadvertent, but these days I’m starting to realize that fate has a funny way of undermining deliberate actions . . . it’s just easier go with the flow!

Anyway, Esther K makes gorgeous jewelry inspired by rambling road trips, the fabled Lenox Avenue, and Egyptian Queens . . .

Making her home in both New Orleans and New York before recently settling in Philadelphia, Esther K. draws inspiration from her travels around the globe, dusty vintage ephemera, grainy photos of dancing girls, and cast off costumes. Degrees in both fine art and fashion design have given her an eye for subtle nuances of color, texture and line. Her work continues to be inspired by time spent living in New Orleans. The city’s sultry beauty, night blooming jasmine, and raucous brass bands serve as a powerful fuel for her imagination. Esther K. also finds endless inspiration in music. From transcendent T. Rex licks to the tinny notes of Ma Rainey, you are certain to hear the strains of notes as you pass by her studio.

A former New Orleans resident, Esther K. continues to be inspired by the city. As a result, a portion of sales benefit ARTDOCS, an organization that provides affordable health care to the community’s artists.

Her beautiful pieces sell out fast. . . enjoy!
