Finsk: Or, When Shoes Become Art, I Become Late….
So much to share but so little time. I guess I’m experiencing a sort of end-of-summer overload…. like… everything from weekends past is sort of culminating this week into something that’s leaning towards disaster, but I believe can still be saved. We’ll see.
Good things I have my Aventura mix for the T… Romeo (the guy you have all been salivating over in my side bar who looks like a certain Ray of SS I know…)’s voice is perfect. Anyway here are some gorgeous shoes to start your Monday. For more on Finsk and designer Julia Lundsten click ici….

When in Romania*, Enjoy Vicious Candy… and Drake’s Mixtape
I just came back from another introspective/ coincidence filled weekend. 3 down, 6 more to go before things start to settle down. I had planned on devoting this summer to writing . . . but it seems like now it’s devoted to experience. I will save the writing for the cold Boston winter that awaits.
Anyway, on to fashion….
When in Rome, do as Silvia and Laura do and create beautiful couture! They are the brains behind the gorgeous Roman label Vicious Candy… they have just released this sexy yet playful collection. I will get back to you when I find out where you can shop. The designers definitely wanted you to be the first to know about their gorgeous new collection…. so enjoy and be sure to send them feedback! How fun would that first dress be for our little party in NYC??
How amazing would one of these outfits look with a pair of Charlotte Olympia’s?
I hate the fact that I am obsessed with shoes, but as I have said numerous times, wearing suits every day of the week will do that to do you. I am sure all of you fashion savvy readers have heard of and possibly own Charlotte Olympia, but just in case you don’t, I offer you one of my biggest shoe obsessions.
On a side note, I woke up this early this morning (by necessity, not by choice… work hard play hard, you know the drill) and found the suggestion for VC in my inbox. As much as I enjoy mulling over what I am going to write about, I always love suggestions from you . . . there are so many great designers out there I never would have heard about but for your creative, fun, and thoughtful suggestions, so please keep them coming!
What’s on your mind? I’d love to hear your thoughts on:
- Something fun to wear for my weekend in the Hamptons… I’m looking for conservative but not cookie cutter. Nothing mainstream…
- I am mildly obsessed with upper-arm cuff bracelets… especially the whole “Cleopatra” snake look… has anyone seen/ does anyone make something like that?
- Your thoughts on: over the knee boots for fall, frohawks and mohawks, and this new bootie-obsession….
Ooops… almost forgot the song of the day! You all know how I love Elzhi… I’m also feeling Drake… be sure to check out “Think Good Thoughts” featuring these two artists along with Phonte. You can also download Drake’s mixtape here.
*Correction… these great designers are from Romania, not Rome!

Camilla Skovgaard and more…
Hola! It’s been a while, I know. I had to kind of disappear into work for a bit, but it was well worth the effort and I’m back!
Today’s designer is the absolutely wonderful Camilla Skovgaard. I am obsessed with her shoes! About CS:
Camilla Skovgaard was born in Denmark, north of Copenhagen, as the youngest of three children. In her late teens, she moved to Paris to train in couture, the late Monsieur Erik Mortensen of Balmain had written her some encouraging words when she sent him her sketches. Aged 20 a French owned fashion house brought Camilla to Dubai to design for the Gulf Sheikhs’ wives and daughters and it was in this connection that she eventually came onto shoes. Shoes were often ignored, something tucked in under floor length dresses’ hems and yet so crucial for the final look. Few years later Camilla partnered with a local, took over a team of tailors and embroidery technicians, and was summoned to the late President H.H. Sheikh Zayed al Nahyan’s palace for designs. In 1998 DeBeers Inc. choose Camilla’s dresses for their diamond show in Dubai, a rare occasion where her work could be seen in public. As is the custom for women in Muslim countries, theirs is a life lived in privacy, mostly in the company of other women and no media. Curiously, her business partner observed that while she had top clients then it was as if she had not yet found her true niche. As the story unfolds - Camilla believes shoes are something that she understands better than clothing. After 7 years in Dubai Camilla moved to London in 2000 and completed a BA (hons) degree, score 1:0, in footwear at the esteemed Cordwainers shoe college. She learnt how to make shoe patterns, cut the leather, close uppers and last shoes. Camilla won a number of prestigious awards in recognition of her talents as a shoe designer, namely Award for Excellence in Footwear 2003, London College of Fashion, Young Designer of the Season Award 2003, Footwear UK, Innovation in Fashion Award 2002, Cordwainers. Her eponymous shoe line took shape when she met Italian contacts in high-end shoe manufacturing during her MA at the Royal College of Art in London from where she graduated in 2006; Saks Fifth Avenue in the US bought her first shoes. Halfway through her MA Camilla was also appointed shoe designer for British fashion house Matthew Williamson with whom she is collaborating on 7th season (AW09-10).
How badly do I want those orange sandals? You have no idea!!

Hording Horigome
I didn’t used to be a shoe person…. seriously, I never got the whole “Carrie” Sex and the City thing until I started working in a wear-a-suit-to-work-everyday job. Now I’m totally addicted! I love independent designers, but it’s harder with shoes. That’s why I was so excited to discover Koji Horigome’s amazing (seriously, how sexy are those boots!!) collection of gorgeous shoes. This London based brand uses a specially developed asymmetrical shoe shape and a mixture of traditional shoe crafting and futuristic materials during the design process. Koji Horigome was born in Japan and uses his background in Mechanical Engineering and Fashion design to create these truly breathtaking looks.
You can browse his collection on Not Just a Label where you can also purchase Asymmetrical Women’s Derby Shoes!

Chaaaamone (Boston Accent Included)
Ever since I’ve been stuck wearing a suit 5 out of 7 days a week I’ve developed a sort of shoe fetish. Marc, Michael, and Christian… you know the drill. You can imagine my thrill when I discovered Charmoné a line of beautiful sexy shoes that are both sustainable and cruelty-free (bank account beware!!) Every shoe incorporates European design and quality while using only animal-free, eco-friendly materials. Charmoné believes that no one should sacrifice their style conscious just to serve their social conscience. The brand is focused on compassionate design. From the site:
COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS
This all started when a vegan friend, often clad in the latest, coolest, designer leather shoes, complained that all non-leather shoes were either a) ugly; b) poor quality; and often c) both! It got us thinking- why all the fuss about leather anyway? Isn’t there a way, in this modern age, to get away from using animal skins as the ultimate luxury? Traditionally, non-leather shoes were considered inferior due to poor construction, lack of breathability and generally being harder on the environment. We found a way to eliminate every traditional barrier by using high-quality Italian microfibers that are constructed exactly like leather, making them breathable, lightweight and colorfast. Not to mention water-resistant! So you can easily be a nice person while wearing killer heels. We won’t tell anyone.COMPASSION FOR THE PLANET
How can you use synthetic materials and call it eco-friendly? Well, believe it or not, the process of creating microfiber is less polluting to the environment than the process of tanning, factory farming and processing leather. In addition, the materials are free from harmful PVCs, using instead a light polyurethane coating which is gentler on the environment. We also incorporate sustainable practices throughout the production process, from using last boards made from 70% pre-consumer waste to using recycled materials in our boxes, business cards and other printed materials. Who says it’s not easy being Green?COMPASSION FOR PEOPLE
Charmoné shoes are made sweatshop-free in Italy and Brazil, ensuring you enjoy quality craftsmanship without contributing to harsh working conditions. In addition to minimizing the impact of manufacturing, Charmoné takes it a step further by donating 5% of all profits to charities that support people, animals and the environment. The first charity slated for donation is Women for Women International, a charity that provides women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with the tools and resources they need to move from poverty and crisis to stability and self-sufficiency. We feel incredibly lucky to be doing what we love and hope to help others do the same.
I’m running around like crazy today… more later!

Tread Trends
You know how much I love shoes… right? Or maybe you don’t. It was a long process for me. At first I just didn’t get it.
Then I had to wear a suit every day and it was like, Eureka! … Sometimes a nice pair of Marc Jacobs is the only way to distinguish yourself from the grey-suit-wearing masses… you know?
For some really unique shoes, be sure to check out Jeffrey Campbell…
Based in LA, the line is created by Jeffrey himself with the help of his wife, Christine, and his small, but hard working staff. With strong ties to street culture, music and vintage inspirations, his collections have something to offer everyone. Each season the collection grows–offering Jeffrey’s spin on the hottest trends, and his updates to vintage classics of yesteryear. As seasons progress and fashion continues to change, the Jeffrey Campbell design team attempts to create shoes and looks which are innovative, fun and forward.
You can find his stuff online in various boutiques… check him out on KarmaLoop!

Isn’t Science Beautiful?
Ah my last day of vacation freedom has come and gone. I spent most of my day yesterday walking around my new neighborhood.
I rediscovered (have I told you that I lived here before?) my favorite little grocery shop, bought a yummy bottle of wine at this adorable little wine shop, worked out at the gym and learned a little bit about spontaneous celebrations. You’d think all that walking around would have killed my feet, especially since I was wearing an adorable pair of heeled sandals. No so with my latest shoe obsession, Asgi! Asgi is a new shoe company that creates comfortable women’s shoes designed in Venice, Italy. Asgi combines a state-of-the-art, patent-pending technology called Soleplex with stylish designs. Soleplex is basically a comfort technology that supports the natural contours of the foot. Unlike some other shoe companies that make adjustments to their shoes for comfort, Asgi decieded to work from the bottom up, building their style on this innovative technology.
The leading design director at Asgi, Maggi Mercado, has created a line of shoes that epitomize the notion of “technology wrapped in luxury.” She currently lives in Boston (I’m telling you guys, Boston is where it’s at!) and has, along with the talented Asgi design team, created a fabulous fall collection that I’m sure you’ll love.
When I got my Gaia Wedges I was immediatley impressed. They’re stylish and amazingly flexible and comfortable. I love the sporty heel! The company is very customer-centered and you will love everything from the packaging to the shoes themselves. I got a sneak peek at the fall 2008 line and love Asgi’s take on the classic Mary Jane.
I could go on and on, but I am still trying to find my way in my new place, and somewhere around here is a suit I have to battle with this morning. Stay cool (it’s supposed to reach 90 here today!)– more later.
