PLEASE don’t ask me why I’ve had this song stuck in my head for days. What were we thinking in late 80’s 90’s? Seriously though, Belinda Carlisle was one of my idols. Plus, what goes around comes around, and those boots are totally “in” right now… lol.
I am having server issues with the website… I don’t know exactly what that means, but I do know the site is set up between two different website companies… and I’m pretty sure the problem is with one of them. Which one? I don’t know. How to fix? I’m stumped. Time to elicit some tech support!
While I muck my way through DNS-whats-it-whosies and FTP-uploading-server-whatevers (I really am smart, just not when it comes to this stuff), I figure it’s best to leave you with some great fashion to mull over.
V e l v e t L e a f recently showed at LA Fashion week to rave reviews! Designers/ Sisters Laura & Becky Carter have always joked that Laura is the Velvet and Becky is the Leaf. Laura brings an edgy, classic look to the line and Becky brings a vintage, global nomad look, hence the name (and the look of)
V e l v e t L e a f , a Certified Organic, fashion forward clothing line, focusing on sustainability.
Cognizant of the need to provide for the needs of the world’s current population without damaging the ability of future generations to provide for themselves,
V e l v e t L e a f operates in a sustainable fashion. All of their clothing is ECO SKAL Certified, an International Control Union Certification. This means that they use 100% Certified Organic Cotton, as well as manufacturing with certified factories that use low wastage dyes, fair labor, and sustainable packaging.
At V e l v e t L e a f . Laura and Becky are always looking for the “right” sustainable alternative. As green becomes chic, please be assured that they’ll never cut corners and will always produce 100% Certified organic products.
I love their flowy designs and playful silhouettes!
*For those who get the “crushed velvet” reference… you know you love it!?
In these crazy times I sometimes feel guilty writing about fashion… I mean… most people, myself included, have had to make certain sacrifices due to the current economic situation. However, as I’ve said before (I might have even said it yesterday… I was up at 4am this morning so I’m not thinking entirely straight) this is about more than just fashion. At least for me. It’s about art, it’s about the little guys following their dreams and its about true creativity. Anyone who goes after what they want without fear is definitely an inspiration to me…
In addition, there are some brands that mold themselves on a concept… like today’s label Perfectly Imperfect. Designer Jadie Kadletz is an LA based designer who created this organic line with style and quality in mind.
The collection is inspired by the Wabi Sabi way of life.
Wabi Sabi is an ancient Chinese philosophy adapted by the Japanese tea masters. This belief stands for things that are fresh and simple. It denotes simplicity and quietude, and also incorporates rustic beauty. It includes both that which is made by nature, and that which is made by hand. It can also mean an accidental or happenstance element (or perhaps even a small flaw) which gives elegance and uniqueness. It helps us to see the beauty in imperfection and to discover that our so-called flaws can also lead us to our greatest strengths and treasures. When we know this fundamental joy, we can reveal the post powerful and positive sides of our-self.
Not only does Jadie introduce us to a great collection of gorgeously wearable organics, but she gives us something to think about as well. I was talking to a friend about this concept just the other day. Sometimes, it’s the collection of a persons tiny imperfections that make them perfect… you know?
I love the fact that being eco-conscious is no longer considered a trend, but a way of life. For designer Meiling Chen, sustainable style came naturally (no pun intended, but it kinda works doesn’t it?) and her distinctive line is one of the freshest out there. Meiling’s early introduction to fashion was watching her father transform traditional suits and shirts into the latest contemporary styles. That experience, combined with a background in fine arts and sculpture has created a collection that encompasses the relationship between these interrelated fields. Meiling believes that a person’s clothes represent an artistic means of personal expression. Her collection is absolutely gorgeous! I love the crisp lines, interesting silhouettes and earthy colors. Meiling’s goal is to bring fun and creativity to people’s daily lives through her sustainable work… one click through her collection and I’m sure you’ll agree she’s achieved that goal and then some!

I changed back to the more minimalistic version of the site today… the other one was just taking too long to load!
I had a great talk last nigh and it reminded me about the important things in life. It’s so often we get wrapped up in the superficial aspects of things, you know? I mean, I know I write about fashion (which some would argue by it’s very nature is superficial)… but at the end of the day it’s the art, the passion, and the dream of the independent designers that really inspires me and keeps me writing. I may add to this thought later, but there’s that whole work-thing I need to attend to…
Before I go I thought you’d like to start your day with Lola Faturoti.
Born the daughter and granddaughter of tribal chiefs in her native Ondo, Nigeria, designer Lola Faturoti is deeply influenced by her personal history and her African roots. Introduced to the world of fashion by her grandmother (who designed traditional Nigerian clothes), and her mother (who traveled the world snagging up cool clothes for her daughter), Lola studied fashion in London and eventually moved to NYC where she launched her first collection.
Inspired by iconoclastic, independent, individual women, Lola’s collection is fun, relevant and truly gorgeous. You’ll love her fun-fabrics and dreamy- silhouettes.
Amy Odell’s feature on The Cut shows the politics of fashion:
Sonia Rykiel’s spring 2009 collection included sweaters that read “I have a dream” and “Obama.” Jean-Charles de Castelbajac put Barack’s grinning face on a dress paired with gloves that read “yes” and “no” — probably his way of saying “rock the vote.”
For more check out The Cut on NY Mag. Gotta love it… or maybe you don’t? I’d love to hear your thoughts :-).
I blame Erika for my inability to reign in my spending this weekend… I mean, what kind of friend drags me to Natik, literally throws an adorable Blazer in my arms makes me buy it, and then convinces me to snag a cute pair of MJ heels for like a quarter of the price (last seasons style, but this seasons colors, go figure?)…
Ok, I don’t actually blame her. In fact, I had a great time. I haven’t had a good girlie shopping weekend in a while. She even put up with me as I contemplated a $400 pair Chloe boots (down from $1,500… what a deal, right?) and as I blushed through a couple of blush-worthy texts (see “prescription for a persistent smile“).
Anyway I thought I’d get a post in before the Pats game (Although it sounds like there have already been a couple interceptions and a SF TD, geez!!)
Anyway, as you already know, Dubai Fashion Week starts today. One of the many great designers showing over the next few days is Asudari by designer Lamia Asudari. You will love her fun collection inspired by the contrast of East and West. With an eclectic mix of fluid lines, intelligent tailoring, and fresh mature prints, her collection is both exciting and wearable. She pays amazing attention to every little detial, creating a look that is decidedly individualistic and effortlessly chic. Be sure to check out all of the great designers showing this week, or stop by 9th at Emirates Towers if you’re in the area (and please send pics if you are… we’d love to see them!)
It’s like… I open my eyes and it’s Monday… I blink … and it’s Friday. My weeks are going by way too quick!
Before I wrap up my week (which, looking at my calendar, should be no small task today) I wanted to tell you about Reif Clothing.
Reif strives to create exquisite clothes that are both unique and versatile. Designer and Reif creator Lindsey Reif chooses from a subtle, neutral color palette and revels in the ubiquity of classic silhouettes. The label incorporates singular and durable fabrics that are sustainably produced and are engineered to withstand the test of time. They effortlessly integrate into any wardrobe and “fit like friendship.”
Reif believes that simplicity doesn’t necessarily exclude individuality. Their garments are made with care….there is a purpose for each stitch and an intention for every fold. The brand seeks to unite style with practicality, using both quiet and striking details. Reif fights the homogenization of style with a steady needle and stalwart thread, crafting clothes that will spend more time on shoulders and hips than in closets.
How much do you love the Mayfair Trench (above?)…. you can buy Reif at Smashing Darling.
I love this song. I’m on a Common kick right now (maybe because I’ve seen the light…lol) Anyway, it’s kinda funny, our boy Avon can’t seem to catch a break!
I’m sort of in a daze this morning, so please excuse the late post and any typos that might result. I’m trying to make sense of all the craziness in my life right now… which of course means late night conversations and contemplations which can create a zombie-like situation the next morning. I guess that’s what large (or Venti or whatever, I Starbucks-lingo) iced caramel macchiatos are for! I will try to write more later… in fact one company actually approached me about writing a kind of diary-style blog about my life. I really don’t think I’m that interesting so I will likely stick with the fashion. If I change my mind, you’ll be the first to know! Speaking of fashion…
Today’s post is about a fun, whimsical, NYC based design house called Doucette Duvall. About the line:
Stephanie Doucette and Annebet Duvall met in March 2003 as neighbors in Manhattan’s Little Italy, where they chit-chatted on their Mulberry Street fire escape.
A few years later, on Valentine’s Day 2005, the pair launched Doucette Duvall, a dress and coat line that sought to fill a fashion void in their own wardrobes. Their whimsical yet timeless designs embodied the wit and elegance of their mothers, grandmothers and aunties. And like the women who influenced their fashion style, the designers strongly encourage the personal interpretation of each piece.
Doucette Duvall practices environmental and social responsibility by manufacturing the entire collection in New York City’s historic garment district, using pre-existing fabric and trim, shunning extraneous garment bags and hang tags, and shipping in recycled boxes only. Look for the “little green dress” in each collection as a reminder of their commitment to Madame Earth. A portion of the proceeds from the lgd are donated to the non-profit group, Build it Green, who share a similar reuse ideal. For more information, please visit: www.bignyc.org.
Doucette Duvall is selectively distributed in fine and specialty boutiques throughout the United States and abroad.
Thanks so much for all the great suggestions, please keep them coming! The best brands are the ones you suggest. Just drop me a line: brooke@urbansocialite.com.
Nothing like stopping someone on the street and being like, “OMG, where did you get that jacket?!”
See the lengths I go to to bring you great fashion?
The jacket, I was told, was from Elevate and Collide an up-and-coming label due to release their first full collection in stores soon (they’re scheduled for Pool in 09′). E&C designer Susan Brunet recently did an interview with Shopflick and you can find a couple of her pieces at Revolve (love the grey jacket).
I need to elevate myself from this seat and collide with a shower before I’m super late for work. That was cheesy, I know … I’ll try to post more later on today.
A certain someone has had me smiling incessantly for weeks (months?!) now. To the point I told this certain someone that they are personally responsible for the ever-increasing smile lines that have developed since I’ve known them. I was going to make them pay for Botox (ok, it’s not quote at the Botox level… yet….) but then the Gods from Prescriptives sent me a little miracle in a tube known as “Super Line Preventor Xtreme Lifting Concentrate.” Yikes. A mouthful, right? I figured I try it, because it seems like there’s no end in sight to my perma-smile predicament. This stuff, like everything Prescriptives makes (I still use and obsess over “Good in Bed”) is awesome! It even got rid of the little worry line I have been developing on my forehead since I was like, 18. Or maybe it’s the smiling that did that? Either way I’m hooked on both (the Lifting Concentrate and the source of my smiles).
Moving along to another addiction/ obsession. I’m so excited about Pre-Loved because they are just that, Pre-Loved by moi, so I know you will absolutely adore them.
Pre-Loved designer Julia Grieve is a true renaissance woman. After working in the international fashion industry for over a decade, Julia was ready to transcend the world of modeling and invest her energy and fashion sense into designing for her own retail store. Now celebrating its 14th year of business, Pre-Loved is one of the hottest spots on Toronto’s Queen Street West. The company has made its mark with their second store on the trendy St. Laurent strip in the fashion Mecca of Montreal as well as a wholesale clientele that spans the globe.
Julia started this company 13 years ago with a fashion first focus. “The environmental aspect of the company wasn’t in the forefront,” said Julia. However, her practices have proven to be good not only for your look, but for the planet as well. To date she has recycled over 60,000 (WOW!) sweaters and turned them into gorgeous pieces like you see above. Love the fact that she was inadvertently ahead of her time with her proven-to-be eco-friendly practices!
