So, I’ve been back in Boston for a few days after a quick (and inspiring) trip to the Midwest. Congrats Rob and Megan!! Anyway, I’m still trying to figure out why people don’t smile here. It’s really starting to bother me.
For instance:

In CHI, when you’re walking down the street and someone is walking towards you, there is always this slight smile/nod that accompanies the encounter. Nothing aggressive or invasive. Most of the time,  no words are exchanged. It’s just a short, simple encounter that’s like, “Hey! You’re human, I’m human, we’re passing each other, lets acknowledge that.” In Boston, this kind of encounter is usually an awkward series of gestures to avoid that kind of interaction: checking a cell phone, adjusting an iPod, or just plain looking in the other direction until the other person has passed you on the street.

The other day I had to walk about a mile through the city and tried to bring a little bit of the Midwest to Boston. It was so awkward! Most people wouldn’t even make eye contact. The ones that did, were so taken aback by the quick exchange that they actually stopped to say hello. One woman asked if we knew each other.

My point is, Geez Boston!! Can you please just smile?! Seriously, it’s not that hard. And it really does make you feel good.

In closing, to the woman with the vintage Chanel purse (of course I noticed), the cute guy with dreadlocks and the Zulu Nation t-shirt, the hurried business man talking on his bluetooth and the guy in the Acura low-rider (for the record, he actually engaged the smile/conversation, but in the spirit of the experiment I’ll count it)… thanks for the smiles and hopefully the rest of Boston will catch on.

Here’s something to smile about: Today’s designer Stylein! From the site:

Stylein loves the female body and combines the contrasts of a feminine soft image with a more edgy and rock inspired image. In the world of Stylein, these contrasts form a perfect harmony.

All designs are inspired by the energies of life, which gives Stylein its unique expression - always with beautiful lines and rare details. Stylein’s vision is to bring out the inner beauty from the woman who wears its garments, allowing her to fully express her individual personality and femininity. She should easily be able to dress up or go for a more casual look, but always in Stylein.

Stylein is a Swedish fashion company, launched in 2001 by founder and chief designer Elin Nyström, while she lived in New York City. Elin showed her first handmade collection in 2001, whilst studying at Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in New York.

After returning to her native country of Sweden in 2002, Stylein expanded and is today based in her hometown Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden - this is also the home of Stylein’s official concept store.

Today Stylein is available in selected stores in Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Russia, South Korea, Spain, UK and USA.

I love the sheer baggy tights!

Happy Veterans Day! Please take some time out to thank those who dedicate their lives to our freedom… It’s so easy to take things for granted, even in the  world of fashion… I mean… did you read about Karachi fashion week? I’m obviously not trying to be disrespectful by reducing everything down to fashion, but you’re here for the clothes and I think it’s important to realize that the sacrifices our troops have made and continue to make affects every single aspect of our lives. While you’re sitting comfy in your office or at home reading this, there are millions of people who have fought, died and dedicated their lives to the moment you have right now, and thousands more who are overseas working day in and day out to protect it… There are tons of sites out there accepting donations for care packages and if you haven’t donated before, today would be a great day to start!

If you haven’t picked up little glimpses of it here and there I have some pretty strong opinions about things, instead of going on and on I’ll move on to today’s designer Carin Rodebjer.

Carin Rodebjer started out in 1999 while studying at F.I.T. (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York. After being spotted on the street wearing her handmade designs, she started selling at some high profile stores in New York. Returning to her native country of Sweden in 2001, Rodebjer continued her dedication of creating a line of clothing that reflected her ideas of combining contemporary and at the same time classic design with wearability.

The kind of people I admire have a timeless quality, and that’s also how I want my collections to feel,” Carin explains.

Rodebjer has gained a reputation in Sweden as well as internationally for its strong signature look - firmly contemporary fashion with sharp silhouettes and timeless design. Carin Rodebjer was awarded ”Designer of the Year” by Swedish Elle Magazine in 2002 and 2005. In 2005 Rodebjer was also awarded the “Fresh Faces of Fashion” award by Gen Art and “Guldknappen” by Damernas Värld.

Loyale to the Environment PLUS 4/22 ONLY 25% OFF and FREE SHIPPING :)

I am obsessed with Aventura for the sole reason their music has gotten me through this transitional New England “spring” period. But for Romeo Santos, I would probably be sitting on a beach somewhere in South or Central America, margarita in hand, responsibilities out the window. Thanks to my over-active imagination and a 20 minute subway ride in the morning I can kind of day dream myself into a place that, to date, has prevented the plane trip … which is good considering my current financial state!

Anyway, as you know it’s Earth Day, or was Earth Day (isn’t every day Earth Day?!)… and Loyale is a perfect sustainable clothing company to share in consideration thereof!

Loyale is a fashion-forward, sustainable clothing company that aims to make the simple act of getting dressed in the morning world changing. In 2005, Jenny Hwa founded Loyale to provide eco-chic apparel for women who are equally conscious about fashion as they are about the environment. The intention of Loyale is to inspire activism by designing stylish clothing that is crafted exclusively using sustainable fabrics and to create a shift in consciousness where commerce and compassion for the planet can coexist. These convictions, coupled with her work experience at Catherine Malandrino, Kate Spade, Chaiken and Calypso Christiane Celle, as well as her business and fashion degrees from Dominican University and F.I.T. laid the foundation for the creation of Loyale.

Loyale’s clothing is inspired by understated sophistication, alluring fit and sustainable fabrics for the fashionably conscious set.  Taking an ecological stance, while creating frocks with beckoning silhouettes and charming details are Loyale’s signature criterions.

Hwa incorporates organic cotton, factory reclaimed overstock fabrics and color grown organic cotton in her design. She also contributes 1% of Loyale’s annual profits to green corps, a non-profit that trains the next generation of environmental leaders. And lets be real, I wouldn’t be writing about her if her designs weren’t fabulous!

Enjoy and Happy Earth Day/ Week
