Puttin on the Rietz

I’m so serious about the personal assistant thing. I mean… I haven’t had a second to breathe lately. This always happens around this time of year…
I won’t bore you with the trials and tribulations of the past week or so, but suffice it to say I was overbooked, overwhelmed and overextended. As always, thanks to my amigos for being so supportive and helpful ;).

Today’s designer is Liza Rietz and I’m quite certain you’re going to love her as much I do!

Liza Rietz began designing and sewing custom and retail pieces in 2001. She has been a part of Portland’s artistic clothing community from the beginning of her career, participating in multiple group and independent fashion shows in the area. Her designs have been available nationally in high-end boutiques in Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles and Washington DC. Liza Rietz designs are currently available for both custom and retail at her studio/store “liza rietz” in Portland, Oregon.

Rietz’s modern designs are structured yet feminine, detailed yet wearable, and are created individually, not mass-produced. Rietz designs two small lines annually, producing small batches of each individual design. Though her collections adhere to the seasons, her lines are not season-specific. Instead, Rietz focuses on designing clothes that are versatile and that easily translate to any time of year.

Rietz’s designs are made out of all natural fabrics including cottons, linens, silks, and bamboos. With a small production run of each line, the individuality of each piece exemplifies how clothing can be artistic and expressionistic as well as functional.

How stunning is that jacket!? I want!

Embattled by an onslaught of introspection, holiday obligations, and technical difficulties, I have been bad about writing… really bad…
That being said, my introspection continues… the holidays parties continue to flow from one to the next to the next… and my internet should be all set by this weekend, so I guess that’s  progress. I’m stopping myself now before this turns into some long discourse on love, luck, fate and friendship. I will stick to fashion.

Today’s designer:

Viridis Luxe’s mission is to provide sustainable luxurious clothing to those who are making the choice to tread lightly on our planet while continuing to enjoy fashion, luxury, and style. The Viridis Luxe aesthetic is the embodiment of effortless chic. Their signature organic fabric, exclusive to Viridis Luxe, is a revolutionary blend of the finest cashmere with long-fiber hemp. The Viridis Luxe line also includes exotic bamboo t-shirts and an exclusive sheer silk~hemp collection of jersey tops.Viridis Luxe is committed to making beautiful clothing using ethical, sustainable, eco-friendly methods.

Enjoy!

Grovel for Gravel

by urbansocialite on October 28, 2008

 eve-gravel-19skirtbarelylegal.jpg

For whatever reason I could NOT sleep last night… I always get a little cabid-feversih this time of year….
Hence the 2am phone conversations/ emails about capitalism, physics and the American Dream…

Anyway,  I’m ready to pack my pink and green suitcase and jet off somewhere without explanation. One place that’s always fun to visit (and that a group of us is considering,) is Montreal. If you happen to be there or happen to be going there, be sure to check out one of Quebec’s hottest young designers, Eve Gravel.

Her designs are fun, flirty, with a kind of refined edge. I love stuff that can go from the office to a night out without much fuss…
You can buy her stuff at one of my favorite online shops, Mudshark (I wrote about them a while back).

Anyway I would write more, but her clothes speak for themselves and seeing as I’m dealing with a random bout of insomnia I am somewhat dragging and need to figure out all that is today.

Toofly

by urbansocialite on April 13, 2008

toofly.JPG

Every now and then I miss New York. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve accepted the fact that I’m a Boston girl at heart (cold, aloof, you know the drill), but there’s something about New York I’ve missed ever since I left. Something about the feel, the smell, the vibe of the city. Maybe that’s why I like Toofly so much. Her graffiti art captures what I like best about New York. Taking her world-renowned art from the streets to boutiques was no easy task, but Toofly’s creative brand is sure to be one of your favorites. I love her t-shirts!

From her bio:

Toofly’s journey into the world of art began with her commute to public school from her Corona, Queens neighborhood. Her trips were filled with adventurous sketches as she immersed herself in the myriad of graffiti tags, fill-ins, and outlines viewed on almost every deconstructive surface along the way. It was precisely the rebellious artistic spirit of the 90’s street graffiti movement that drove Toofly to join its subculture ranks. Highly influenced by the calligraphy and illustration skills of some exceptional writers at the time, a teenage Toofly aspired to become the female version of what she most admired. She began to develop her own knack for “hand styles” and her unique Toofly characters. Her work soon blossomed on various graffiti black books, allowing her skills to be recognized by writers across the five boroughs.

By the time Toofly entered the School of Visual Arts (SVA), she had introduced her character to the walls of New York. At SVA, she applied her artistic skills to illustration and graphic design coursework. Finding inspiration in the New York urban landscape, this artist in the making began to juxtapose her “around the way girl” character against multi layered street imagery for various print and public art projects. Toofly’s constant and active role in the hip hop community allowed her to remain true to her roots, as she continued to draw raw feelings from the ever-changing and spontaneous public art world around her.

Her most recent projects include her independent fashion accessory, and stationary label made up of mini graffiti bags, limited edition t-shirts, and paper goods. In addition she has featured a new series of paintings called “Starz”, inspired by the sensual, physical, and emotional attributes of idolized females. In the Fall of 2005 Toofly was the sole female among the crew of graffiti writers the MOTUG company assembled for an exclusive line of t-shirts, sneakers, and toys bearing her signature character. During this time Toofly also collaborated on a city wide mural series for the crew alongside the likes of Ces, Cope2, Doze, Ewok, Ghost, NYC Lase, and T-Kid.

Toofly’s art and design work have appeared in magazines such as Mass Appeal, Juxtapoz, Kicksclusive, Fuego, Urban Latino, The Source, URB, and Honey. Her street art is currently on display at the Graffiti Hall of Fame, Hunts Point in the Bronx, and various walls throughout Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Elsie’s Secret

Victoria’s Secret just doesn’t do it for me… I mean as much as I enjoy their marketing, the actual products just don’t impress. The bras are fine, but not worth $48. Their undies are cute, but not amazing. That’s why I love Elsie’s custom line On The Inside. She makes everything to order, which means each piece is made just for you! No longer do you have pick between sizes that almost fit … she’ll custom tailor whatever you order to fit perfectly. Her designs are lacy, beautiful, and super comfy (just check out the feedback from her customers). The best part (yes, there’s always a best part), her bras go for around $30!

Celebrate the Sox (With Cool Tees and Sweats!)

by urbansocialite on April 8, 2008

gosox.JPG

Today was opening day for the Red Sox (they won!)… now I know it makes me a bad Bostonian, but I have to say I’m not the biggest Sox fan. Baseball just doesn’t do it for me (I’m more of a Celtics girl). I am however, a big fan of the Bean and of Amy Tangerine’s adorable Red Sox T’s and sweatshirts. Her Sox gear is sold exclusively at The Queen Bee and is so adorable I’m tempted to go to a game, just so I can show it off. Check out her exclusive one-of-a-kind designs at The Queen Bee (all garments have amazing details when you click the close ups), and get ‘em while they’re hot (read: before they all sell out)!

Baby got (padded) back

by urbansocialite on April 8, 2008

bootypop.JPG

I told my co-workers I’m trying to keep my sense of humor this week. Along those lines, this post is for Alana.
I told you they make booty underwear. In all honesty, there’s so much I could say about this, I’m speechless. (For some interesting perspectives see Butt Seriously, The Rebirth of the Booty, etc.). Anyway, here’s the skinny (that’s the wrong word, isn’t it?) from Booty Pop:

“More women than ever are wanting the perfect behind - shapely, round and lifted. It is no longer about making the behind disappear. The attention that behinds are getting is due in large part to celebrities like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Biel who confidently strut their full behinds.

Booty Pop is the first hip and trendy padded panties to hit the retail market. No cosmetic surgery necessary! In the same way enhance themselves with their fashionable padded bras, now Booty Pop is available as the panties that make you Booty Pop!”

So if you’re looking to enhance your natural assets… (come on, it was too easy)… here you go.

You Know Who You Are…

by urbansocialite on April 7, 2008

manwhore.JPG

Don’t even pretend like you don’t have one. Every girl…every guy… (unless he is one) has a friend who is, yes I said it, a manwhore. You know exactly what I’m talking about. You make plans to go out with him on Friday. He shows up wearing some “fresh” ensemble reeking of designer cologne. You arrive at the club (or bar if you live in Boston). He orders a Gin and Tonic if he’s metrosexual, Patrón or whatever the latest rap song has in the hook if he’s “urban,” and a good old fashioned Budweiser if a “man’s man.” You talk with him… you laugh with him… you turn around to get another drink and BAM! All of a sudden he’s gone. You search the club for him, to no avail. You step outside to call him and the phone goes straight to voice mail… and then you know. The manwhore has struck again.

If he’s a relatively successful manwhore, this whole series of evens generally happens around 12-1 am. If his game is weak? Look for this to unfold right around 2am (yes ladies and gentlemen, that’s when clubs and bars close in Boston). The next day he will awake, find his way home, fall back asleep. He’ll call you sometime around 3-4pm. As annoyed as you are for his unexpected departure the night before, you’re generally amused by his stories and you’re always glad that he’s your friend.

Why not reward your manwhore with a cute little gift from Ho On the Go (again, I just post… I couldn’t make these things up if I tried).

Ho on the Go was coined by designer Sunny Merry’s girlfriend, Tiffany Norris (yes Sunny Merry’s parents were hippies, in case you were wondering). S.M. was speeding out the door one night for a night on the prowl. She threw a toothbrush and a fresh pair of undies in her bag. Her friend Tiffany said, “Oh is that your Ho on the Go bag?” And thus, the idea was born. Today? Ho On the Go has an adorable selection of gift packs and t-shirts, sure to please your friends… with… shall I say… relaxed morals. I was going to dedicate this post to a certain someone… but I think I’ll just buy him a manwhore pack as a joke instead. Who am I kidding? He’ll use that thing the weekend after he gets it ;-).

At the heart of it… you’re a part of it

by urbansocialite on April 6, 2008

partofit.JPG

As I’m sure you’re well aware, plastic bags are like, so 5-minutes ago (sorry, I watched Clueless today…). Anyway, not only do plastic bags look tacky, but each one, from production to destruction, is killing our planet! That’s why I love the new BYOB (bring your own bag) trend that’s taking over on the East and West Coasts. Not only is it an excuse to buy a new bag, it’s a statement to those in line with you that you care about the planet. Part of It has a cute selection of versatile canvas bags that are sure to turn heads.

Founded in 2007 by Christopher Sleboda and Kathleen Burns, Part of It works with artists to create products for causes they are passionate about. Sales from products benefit charities chosen by the artists. Part of It stems from Christopher and Katheleen’s belief that artists (and conscientious consumers) can make a positive difference in the world by supporting causes close to their heart. Expressions of protest, simple declarations, and moving graphics that encourage conversation and dialog are all ways to enter into and encourage civic discourse. Part of It believes activism can be fun, personal, beautiful and engaging. They believe that we can all play a part in making a better world for ourselves, for our communities, and for future generations.

The causes, charities, and nonprofits selected by artists are the heart of Part of It. Whether local, regional, or international, the work of these organizations targets issues that matter to the artists. Consumers are another part of this equation. When you purchase a product, your money goes to supporting the cause and to continuing the Part of It project. We encourage you to learn more about the organization that benefits from your purchase and support them directly.

Part of It currently supports these worthy causes:

Seriously, how often can you: buy a new bag/ t-shirt, make a difference to a worthy organization and make a statement all the same time? The best part? You can do it all for around $20. Enjoy!

Jammin’

by urbansocialite on April 5, 2008

Finally! The weekend! I still have very mixed feelings about Urban Outfitters, so I was reluctant to write about these earphones (U.O. was the only place I could find them!)– but they’re just so hot! These rich, decadent oversized DJ headphones are designed by Boosted and are the ultimate upgrade for your personal sound system. They’re compatible with mp3 capable cell phones and your iPod. They feature wide dynamic range with booming bass and low distortion. They have all the phone gadgets- including a slim profile answer/end call button and in-line microphone for use with mobile phones. Most importantly, they’re adorable! I would have killed for these back in the 80s!!
